New system for traveling to the European Union

30. 09. 2024.

The European Union has been introducing a new entry and exit system since November this year. In this way, the border crossing process is being improved, and the Entry/Exit System (EES) will start operating from November. This is an automated electronic system that will register data on entry, exit and refusal of entry for citizens belonging to third world countries crossing the external borders of the EU. The system will be fully functional in six months, when ETIAS, a comprehensive system for issuing permits to enter the EU, will start operating.

The EES will officially start operating on November 10, 2024, and before every trip to the EU it will be necessary to register via a mobile application or an online form. In the application, in addition to the basic data of name, surname, date of birth and passport number, it will be necessary to provide information on possible travel bans or participation in wars. Registration is mandatory for every trip.

After the system comes into effect, when entering the EU for the first time, it will be necessary to provide your biometric data, a print of four fingers of your right hand and a scan of the pupil of your eye. Because of this, congestion at the borders is initially expected. However, this data is saved and every subsequent entry/exit you will only leave a fingerprint and you will be photographed, so that every entry or exit of yours will be registered.

For whom does the EES apply

The EES system applies to all citizens of third world countries who do not have the right to free movement within the EU, as well as those coming from the Schengen area who travel without a visa or with a short-stay visa. The system also applies to citizens who have a visa-free regime with the European Union, including Montenegro, Serbia, Macedonia, Bosnia and Herzegovina and other countries.

For whom EES does not apply

The EES system does not apply to citizens of EU countries, nor to those who have residence or long-term residence permits in the EU. Citizens from our region can still enter the EU, Norway, Switzerland, Liechtenstein and Iceland without a visa and stay for a maximum of 90 days in a six-month period. Therefore, these procedures will not be necessary for persons who have work and residence permits in those countries.

Why was EES introduced

By introducing this system, the European Union wants to increase security and enable better control of entry and exit, in order to fight illegal migration as effectively as possible. In addition, in this way, the passage at the borders is accelerated. For most travelers, crossing the border will be faster and easier, especially when automatic border crossing machines are introduced. These devices already exist at almost all airports in the EU, and each country will decide on this individually.

It is important to emphasize that you must definitely have your passport with you. Although there will be no classic stamping, it is still your basic travel document.
