A town that won't let you forget it. An exotic meeting place of greenery and the blue sea, tucked away at the foot of Mount Orjen - an attractive location in Herceg Novi. It is located at the entrance to the Bay of Kotor and offers you many beautiful beaches and Mediterranean landscapes creating an ideal contrast between the sea and the mountains. The land of Herceg Novi was populated by various civilizations, which contributed to its rich historical wealth. In support of this, there are many symbols of this city that are indispensable for tourists during their stay in Herceg Novi. Some of them are: Clock tower, Forte mare fortress, Kanli tower, "Mirko Komnenović" city museum, Nobel laureate Ivo Andrić's house, as well as numerous churches and monasteries.
Clock tower
The clock tower is the most famous symbol of Herceg Novi. It is 16 meters high and was built during the reign of Sultan Mahmud. Next to the entrance door is a memorial to the founder of the town, Tvrtko I Kotromanić. And on the left is a memorial plaque to the soldiers of the Tenth Herzegovina Brigade who liberated the town on October 28, 1944.
Forte mare fortress
In the southern part of the Old Town is the Forte mare fortress, which controlled the approach to the town from the sea side. Forte mare has exceptional architectural value. This fortress offers one of the most beautiful views of the Bay of Kotor, the Old Town and Igalo. Also, various cultural and artistic events and film screenings are organized here.
Kanli tower
The Bloody Tower, translated from the Turkish language, was built in the 16th century and, in addition to defense, also had the function of a prison. On the walls of the Kanli tower, you can see drawings of prisoners, galleys, crosses, coats of arms, names and dates. It was turned into a summer stage that can accommodate 1500 people. The Kanli tower is one of the favorite places for tourists and is considered the most beautiful open stage on the Adriatic.
City Museum "Mirko Komnenović"
Mirko Komnenović was a minister in the government of the Kingdom of Yugoslavia and mayor of Herceg Novi for many years. In his will, he expressed his desire to establish a City Museum in the house he left to the town. The museum was founded in 1949, and was opened to the public in October 1953. The town museum is of a complex type and consists of: Archaeological collection, Historical and artistic, as well as Ethnological collection. What particularly attracts the attention of visitors to the City Museum is the botanical garden, which contains plants from all parts of the world.
House of Ivo Andrić
"It was nice for me in Herceg Novi. On clear days, I often looked and thought about the Montenegrin bishop from the balcony of my house. Oh, the Bay of Kotor was stolen by the Venetians, Turks, Spaniards, Russians, Austrians... How could you not have such beauty?!" This is how Ivo Andrić described his life in the house in Herceg Novi. In fact, the house in Herceg Novi is the only one he built during his lifetime. The house was reconstructed in the period from 2018 to 2020 and exhibits replicas of Nobel diplomas and medals, as well as a stylish mirror, the only original item preserved from Andrić's house. Cultural events and literary evenings dedicated to Ivo Andrić and his work are often organized here.
